Deivone M. Tanksley Sr. Appointed to the Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee

We are proud to announce that Deivone M. Tanksley Sr., Founder of the Connecticut MLK Legacies Corporation and long-time community leader, has been appointed to the Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee (JJPOC).

Through this role, Mr. Tanksley will contribute his lived expertise and leadership to help shape policy at the state level in partnership with the University of New Haven’s Tow Youth Justice Institute (TYJI) and the CEW (Community Expertise Workgroup). Together, this body works to identify more effective, just, and humane approaches to youth justice in Connecticut.

A Voice for Change

Mr. Tanksley brings a unique and critical perspective to the table. With years of hands-on experience in community organizing, reentry support, and violence prevention, he represents the voices of countless families impacted by systemic inequities. His appointment reflects the growing recognition that solutions to youth justice must include the voices of those who have lived through these realities.

Areas of Impact

As part of his work with JJPOC, Mr. Tanksley will focus on:

  • Youth Crime Prevention – Developing strategies that address root causes such as poverty, trauma, and lack of opportunity before they escalate into system involvement.

  • Reentry and Second Chances – Ensuring youth returning from detention are supported with education, mentorship, housing, and resources to break cycles of recidivism.

  • Housing and Stability – Advancing policy that recognizes stable housing as an essential factor in public safety and youth development.

  • Community Expertise Integration – Elevating the lived experiences of community leaders so that state policy is informed by real-world insight, not just theory.

Looking Ahead

Mr. Tanksley’s appointment is a testament to the importance of blending policy, research, and lived experience. His voice will help ensure that Connecticut continues to move toward a more restorative, opportunity-driven youth justice system.

We believe his work with JJPOC, alongside the University of New Haven’s Tow Youth Justice Institute and CEW Community Expertise Workgroup, will lead to meaningful reforms that uplift not only young people, but entire communities.
